SUBJECT: Gathering of Eagles – March 17th in Washington, DC
It has been widely reported that anti-war protesters will be gathering in Washington, DC, March 17, 2007, near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It is the responsibility of the National Park Service and the Park Police to protect the memorials, monuments and related structures that are located on the National Mall and its environs. We have been informed that Park Police will be posted throughout the area and will enforce any and all relevant laws. It is our understanding that this should not preclude the public from visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial or any of the other memorials on that date.
A counter-protest group, the “Gathering of Eagles,” which appears to be comprised primarily of veterans and other patriotic individuals has been organized and will also be present on the National Mall, particularly in the area of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, on March 17th. We are aware the group has applied for a permit to gather as a pro-troop rally and, according to their mission statement, to guard our memorials and their grounds in a non-violent and non-confrontational manner. Although The American Legion has not endorsed the organization, much of the language in the mission statement is similar to that contained in Resolution No. 169 which was unanimously reaffirmed by the delegates to the 2006 National Convention, and their defined efforts are laudable. The group’s website is located at http://gatheringofeagles.org.
It is recommended that any Legionnaires or Posts planning on visiting the memorials or otherwise being in the area of the National Mall in Washington, DC on March 17th, should familiarize themselves with Resolution No. 169 on our website, http://www.legion.org.
