Post 304 National High School Oratorical Contest Scheduled for February 10

We have four contestants for our Post Oratorical Contest. Two from Kennesaw Mountain High and two from North Cobb High. Two males, two females. All very good contestants!

The Post 304 Contest will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2007. It will be held at West Cobb Regional Library, 1750 Dennis Kemp Lane, Kennesaw. Here are driving directions from the Central Library in Marietta:

Take Roswell Street west (it will turn into Dallas Rd.-Hwy.120- outside the city limits). Turn right onto Mars Hill Road at the Old Lost Mountain Store. Continue on Mars Hill until you reach the intersection at Mars Hill and Stilesboro. Go 1 block north of the Mars Hill / Stilesboro Road intersection and turn right onto Dennis Kemp Lane. The library site is located on the left about half way between Mars Hill Rd. and Stilesboro Rd.

(Easiest way it to go Hwy 41 North to Mars Hill Rd., take a left and go 2-3 miles to the Waffle House just before you reach Dallas Hwy. and take a left just beyond Waffle House - go up the hill to the Library.)

If you would like to be involved in the Contest as Judge, Timer, Tabulator, Escort, Usher or in any other capacity, please let Adjutant Burdette know. Feel free to visit the library at your convenience and ask the Librarian to show you the large room behind the first door to your left as you enter the Library, if you wish to familiarize yourself with the Contest location. The room will comfortably seat 40 or so in the audience and we expect about 30 or so to attend, not including the contestants.

The winner of the Post 304 Contest will advance to the District Five Contest, to be held on Sunday, February 18, 2007, at American Legion Post 294, 3282 Florence Rd., Powder Springs, GA, at 4:00 p.m. The second-place winner of the Post 304 Contest will serve as the first Alternate to the District Five Contest.

The Area IV Contest (Districts 4, 5 and 7) will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2007, at Post 42, 1 Roosevelt St., in Cartersville.

Winner of the Area Contest goes to the Department competition in Perry, GA, on Saturday, March 3, 2007. Contest will be at the Houston County Board of Education, 1100 Main St. (341 South), at 1:00 p.m.

Here is the url that will take you to last years' winning National speech: http://www.legion.org:80/video/orawinner_06.wmv It is about 9 minutes or so. The speaker is a senior from an East Tennessee high school. Pretty impressive.

Hope to see many of you at the Post contest.

Above artwork was provided by illustrious Commander Larry Lieber.
Sorry, I couldn't take the credit for this one!

Have you ever been aboard a nuclear powered submarine? Ever wondered what they do when they are at sea or what their missions are? How do the men aboard spend their time? And what about navigation, propulsion and emergencies? How is submarine control similar to airplanes?

Come to the next meeting on Thursday, January 18th and learn more when retired submarine Captain Ron Deering gives us the answers to many of these questions and more. Ron had command of two nuclear submarines during his 27-year Navy career, as well as numerous other jobs in operations, training and intelligence support of submarines.

Doors of the GA Army National Guard Armory, 1901 McCollum Pkwy, Kennesaw, will open at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be available. The meeting will start at 7:15 and Capt. Deering's presentation will follow shortly thereafter. Please let us know if you need transportation.

See ya Thursday!
